Beautiful Times-Owl City ft. Lindsey Stirling Review

My friends know that I’m in love with Owl City’s music, and this brand new collaboration by Owl City and Lindsey Stirling makes me just as happy as all his other works.

Beautiful Times is a dark song with a simultaneously bright and encouraging theme, and this contrast was noted by Adam Young himself (aka, Owl City) in a letter to his fans:

Deeply subjective and personal, it [Beautiful Times] has a dark beauty I find compelling and the essence of the track offers the idea that life is wonderful despite the burdens and afflictions that seek us out.

Just like Adam describes, Beautiful Times aims to bring hope to the hopeless. It describes those who feel as though there is nothing in life to look forward to: “When did the sky turn black?/When will the light come back?”

Masterfully so, Adam provides encouragement to those going through rough times when he says “The sun’s starting to rise/ Oh, oh, these are beautiful times.” This is followed directly by “This fight of my life is so hard, so hard, so hard/ but Im gonna survive/ Oh, oh, these are beautiful times.”

I love the contrast between light and darkness. I also love the way Adam shows that even through the darkness, there is hope; there is something to look forward to since there is a light at the end of the tunnel. We just have to wait for the sun to rise and have patience.

Musically, I love the song as well; not just lyrically. The song has a darker tone similar to his Midsummer Station work as opposed to Ocean Eyes. Lying behind the overlying ominous tone is a brighter tune in he background (which is what the song opens with) that is more reminiscent of his Ocean Eyes days. I find Beautiful Times to be a good balance between his old and new sounds while still leaving an infectious beat and tune.

I look forward to his forthcoming EP which is due sometime this year, and I will definitely be pre-ordering it.

Thanks For Reading
Matt

  1. AWESOME song…………………………………..it is good to see Adam going mixing the sounds of his old and new works and the final result is simply a masterpiece, though i would have liked it even better if Lindsey Sterling would have been a bit more heavily featured 🙂
